“Perfection consists not in doing extraordinary things, but in doing ordinary things extraordinarily well. Neglect nothing; the most trivial action may be performed to God.”
-Angelique Arnauld
Perfection is sometimes given a ranking like a “perfect 10″ in gymnastics, or a 6.0 in a figure skating competition. But think about it. A lot of people can do a cartwheel, a lot of people can ice skate. These are not extraordinary things. But the way that they are executed in these world championships are! Thats how we can have something to aspire to. Those athletes are the role models for perfection in that sport. And yet, those athletes always see room for improvement in some way or another. So, in life, as we aspire to perfection in our spiritual world we have role models, too. We’d probably give Gandhi or Mother Teresa a “10″Â but, they would be the first to say that they were not perfect! Part of our spiritual growth is recognizing that theres always more to learn.

“Ring the bells that still can ring, forget your perfect offering. There’s a hole in everything, That’s how the light comes thru.â€
-Leonard Cohen (1934- )
A big trend in decorating right now is making things looked aged, worn, or imperfect. This adds a sense of history and comfort to a room. The theory is that when everything is new and perfect, it isn’t as relaxing to be in that space. Here we are, living in the space of our imperfect human form – let us see the beauty in our imperfections, that is where our souls shine through!

“Perhaps the crescent moon smiles in doubt at being told that it is a fragment awaiting perfection.â€
-Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)
Our topic this week is perfection. I love this quote! Tagore has such a way with words. Imagine that moon, shining so brightly and proudly – knowing that it is what it is and that it is absolutely perfect just the way it is. Is there anything missing? Not a chance! Can we see our lives in the same light? They are perfect just the way they are right here and right now.

Timely: And of course another timely message. The process of Giving and Receiving has been on my mind lately and I’m grateful that just today I created an opportunity for myself to Give again without expectation!

“The greatest grace of a gift, perhaps, is that it anticipates and admits of no return.â€
-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)
Our topic this week is giving. Give without hesitation. Give without expectation. Give freely of yourself, and step back and observe. There are miracles just waiting to happen.

“Although I try to hold the single thought of Buddha’s teaching in my heart, I cannot help but hear the many crickets’ voices calling as well.â€
-Izumi Shikibu (c 1000)
Sometimes following our spiritual practices can be a challenge because we are so distracted by the demands of everyday life. This is true for everyone – there never seems to be enough time, or enough quiet, to set aside for prayer, meditation, or contemplation. It is so worth it when we do! And yet, spirituality does not have to be a separate experience from the rest of our lives. We can choose to hear the beautiful song of the crickets’ voices as a gift from Nature. We can choose to express gratitude for the full and exciting lives we lead, however busy we may be!
